Why are we here?

It’s beautiful isn’t it? The scenery, everything about it…is just beautiful. If you look at this picture closely you will notice that it represents life, but what is it exactly? So many days go by and I wonder where they disappear to. So many times I am challenged with life’s problems and I wonder why bother trying to face them. One moment I am here and the next I will be gone.

It is a dreadful feeling of anxiety that I endure daily which urges me to ask the question “why are we here?” A lot of philosophers have spent a whole lifetime trying to figure this out, yet most of their answers have been based on their own perceptions surrounding an idea of what they think might be true. As for the average person he/she is way too preoccupied with work, school, trying to raise children or with the hassles of the world and I guess they is never enough time to think about such questions.

What I find interesting is that one of the most common phrases used by grown-ups throughout the world would have to be: “When I was your age, I used to…” It kinds of makes you feel like they are trying to grasp on to something that is slowly fading away from them day-by-day. Reality is, one day we will also be placed in the same position. We will also be trying to grasp on to our lives and no matter how hard we try to hold on – when death comes we just going to have to let go.

One could say that we live to die, work to survive and retire so that we can cherish our few remaining years left to live. If this is the case, then what separates us from any of people who have come before us? I mean throughout centuries, countless populations have all gone through similar processes which indicate to us that our purpose and destiny in life really isn’t that different from any of those generations that came before us. Thus, we could come to the conclusion that us being here isn’t so significant after all because our purpose and destiny in life has been, can be and will be fulfilled by others who have once lived and are living. Another person could say that we live to be successful and also to make a positive difference within the lives of people around us. It makes sense because in this way you would be remembered because of the change that you would have created during your lifetime. However, a nation can only remember a person for so long – a generation can only live for so long, so the difference we make will eventually with time be forgotten.

I know most of you are thinking no that can’t be true because people like Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein are remembered and what about Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King? The list goes on.

True, still here is something I’d like you to think about. Back in the times of these heroes, there must have been millions of other people who had also made a difference. It might not have been as big of a difference in comparison with the difference these heroes had made, but it was still a difference. How many of those people are remembered today?

Even after countless decades of research conducted by philosophers, the question still glooms over our heads “WHY ARE WE HERE?”. Maybe you know something that I don’t or perhaps you might have a solution to this daunting question. What’s important is that you post your comments and let your voice be heard. I’d like to hear what you have got to say.
